The ASRock X870 Challenger WiFi motherboard is a budget-focused ATX board designed for AMD’s AM5 platform. It attempts to incorporate headline features of the X870 chipset, including PCIe Gen 5, USB4, and Wi-Fi 7, priced at $169.99. Reviewers classify the board as an exceptional value proposition.

The power delivery system is a core strength of the board. It utilizes a 16+2+1 phase VRM design featuring 80A Dr.MOS power stages for the CPU vcore. This configuration provides sufficient power to drive AMD’s Ryzen 9000 series processors without thermal throttling. Testing showed the board delivered performance meeting or slightly exceeding higher-priced ASRock models.

Connectivity options are extensive. The rear I/O includes two USB4 Type-C ports capable of 40Gbps transfers and 8K video output, alongside two 10Gbps USB Type-A ports and one 5Gbps port. Networking relies on a Realtek Dragon RTL8125BG 2.5GbE controller and a Realtek 8922AE Wi-Fi 7 module with Bluetooth 5.4.

Memory support is comprehensive. The board includes four DDR5 memory slots, allowing overclocking speeds up to 8000+ MT/s via EXPO and XMP profiles. Storage options consist of four M.2 slots. One slot operates at PCIe Gen 5 x4 for the fastest NVMe drives, while the remaining three operate at PCIe Gen 4 speeds.

PCIe slot configuration presents some limitations. The primary PCIe x16 slot supports Gen 5 x16. The second slot is limited to Gen 3 x2, which is a compromise for users requiring multi-GPU or expansion cards.

Storage connectivity includes two SATA 6Gb/s ports, a reduction compared to many competitors. The audio solution uses the Realtek ALC897 codec, a choice noted as a cost-cutting measure compared to premium codecs found on more expensive boards.

The board features BIOS Flashback on the rear I/O, enabling firmware updates without a CPU installed. The BIOS is described as responsive and functionally identical to other ASRock X870 models. It includes a 64MB BIOS chip for future compatibility.

Specific technical caveats exist regarding bandwidth sharing. The second M.2 slot shares bandwidth with the USB4 Type-C ports. Populating this slot may disable USB4 functionality or reduce its speed to Gen4 x2 unless manual configuration is performed in the BIOS.

Despite these trade-offs, the board delivers strong value. Reviewers noted the quad M.2 slots with heatsink cooling and support for 8000 MT/s memory as key strengths. The main drawbacks include the limited second PCIe slot, the dated audio codec, and the reduced SATA port count.

Overall, the FPS Review awarded the board a score of 8.7. The review concluded that the board made up for minimal design changes with its performance and price, positioning it as a very good starting point for budget-conscious builders. It represents a strong value proposition in the AM5 ecosystem.
