The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition is positioned as a premium business ultraportable. It enhances the classic formula with Intel’s latest Core Ultra Series 3 vPro platform, a redesigned internal chassis, and new AI-assisted software features, while maintaining the recognizable matte-black ThinkPad aesthetic.
The unit starts at $2,139, and was tested at a price point of $2,334. The review model featured an Intel Core Ultra 7 355 processor, paired with 32GB of LPDDR5X-7467MHz memory, a 512GB PCIe Gen4 SSD, and a 14-inch OLED display.
This OLED screen boasts a resolution of 2880×1800 and features a variable refresh rate at 120Hz. A notable highlight is the laptop’s low weight, weighing only 2.15 pounds (0.977 kg), making it one of the lightest premium 14-inch laptops available.
Under the surface, Lenovo significantly reworked the machine using a new Space Frame chassis. This design reduced the motherboard footprint by approximately 20 percent. This space allowed for a larger thermal solution with fans about 70 percent bigger than previous versions, thereby improving sustained thermal performance without sacrificing its featherlight construction.
Despite its weight, users noted a slight flex in the typing deck, though it was not described as overly spongy, and the lid resisted twisting relatively well. The laptop scored an impressive 9/10 on iFixit’s repairability scale, a rarity in this class, and complies with MIL-STD 810H durability standards while using recycled materials throughout its build.
Key input components include a keyboard that maintains one of the best typing experiences available, featuring 1.5mm key travel for satisfying tactile feedback. The signature TrackPoint remains active, complemented by a spacious 120mm glass touchpad supporting Microsoft’s Precision drivers and accurate tracking.
The OLED display offers vibrant colors thanks to full DCI-P3 coverage and deep blacks. Its DisplayHDR True Black 500 certification allows HDR content to benefit from excellent black levels, while an anti-glare coating minimizes reflections without dulling the image quality.
Connectivity was thoughtfully implemented; Lenovo opted not for an exclusive all-USB-C solution. Instead, it includes three Thunderbolt 4 ports, alongside necessary ports like HDMI 2.1, USB-A, a 3.5mm headset jack, and optional Nano SIM support.
The audio experience is handled by a Dolby Atmos speaker system, providing fuller sound than many ultralight notebooks. It offers respect stereo separation, sufficient volume for media or video calls, and uncommon low-end bass response in this weight class.
Further communication features include dual-array microphones with Dolby Voice processing to improve voice pickup and suppress background noise during meetings. Although the 5MP webcam was noted, it may not be able to achieve a higher resolution, and no Intel 12 Xe Graphics option is available.
On the software side, Lenovo’s Vantage utility serves as a central hub. It manages firmware updates, diagnostics, battery management, performance profiles, and Aura Edition features, streamlining customization.
The laptop boasts exceptional battery life with a customer-replaceable 58Whr unit that supports Rapid Charge. Performance, however, can be moderate depending on the CPU configuration, presenting a trade-off for the ultra-lightweight design.
Overall, the ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 14 Aura Edition combines outstanding portability, robust build quality, comfortable keyboard function, excellent display performance, and thoughtful connectivity.
