iOS 27 Brings Advanced AI Photo Tools and Siri Overhauls

Apple is reportedly preparing significant updates across its operating systems with the anticipated release of iOS 27, iPadOS 27, and macOS 27. These annual updates are set to expand the capabilities of Apple Intelligence, suggesting tweaks that may extend beyond merely upgrading the Siri assistant.

A major focus of these updates involves new AI-powered photo editing tools joining the Photos app across Apple’s operating systems. The company’s Clean Up feature, which already uses AI to remove objects, will be one of several “Apple Intelligence Tools” available after the rollout. Users will gain access to new functionalities including “Extend” to expand photo backgrounds using generative AI, “Enhance” for automatically improving elements like lighting and overall image quality, and “Reframe” to adjust the perspective of photos, particularly spatial photos.

These new editing capabilities, if launched, aim to bring Apple’s photo tools closer to those offered by competitors such as Google and Samsung. However, the source notes that both of these rivals still surpass Apple in their readiness to create entirely generated images, citing Google’s Magic Editor feature, which debuted in 2023, as a leading example.

Beyond photo editing, Apple is also reportedly debuting a new version of Siri. This advanced assistant will be powered by Google’s Gemini models and will include a standalone Siri app, alongside AI-powered search capabilities integrated within Apple’s various applications.

Apple is expected to introduce many of these new features during its WWDC keynote on June 8.
