EPOMAKER Luma40: Reviewing the CNC-Cut Aluminum Ortholinear Keyboard

The EPOMAKER Luma40 is a mechanical keyboard featuring a 40% ortholinear layout. It is constructed from CNC-cut aluminum, providing a minimalist and symmetric aesthetic.

The keyboard utilizes an ortholinear layout, departing from traditional, outdated typewriter-style key arrangements by aligning keys in a perfectly aligned grid.

Key design features include a low-profile layout, featuring LAK low-profile keycaps made of transparent PC plastic. The keyboard includes a superior shock-absorbing design, utilizing foam layers that cushion the PCB within the metal frame, which is designed with a tray-mount structure.

Connectivity is multi-faceted, offering tri-mode capability: 2.4Ghz wireless via a dongle, Bluetooth 5.0, and wired connection. It is designed for compatibility across Mac, Windows, and Android devices.

The Luma40 features hot-swappable switches, allowing enthusiasts to experiment with different switch types without permanent setup commitment. It also includes customizable dynamic RGB backlighting with north-facing, per-key LEDs.

For customization, the keyboard is powered by the VIA firmware, enabling users to set macros, remap layouts, assign key functions, and utilize Mod Tap features. Users must download a JSON file beforehand for the VIA tool to recognize the keyboard.

In terms of performance, the Luma40 boasts an N-Key Rollover and anti-ghosting. Its polling rate is 1000Hz in 2.4G or wired mode, and 125Hz in Bluetooth mode. Latency measurements are 3ms for USB, 5ms for 2.4GHz Wireless, and 15ms for Bluetooth.

Other specifications include a rechargeable battery of 1450mAh, offering an estimated 7 hours of use with RGB on and 75 hours with RGB off. The keyboard weighs 410g and has a total of 47 keys. The case material is CNC-cut aluminum, and the plate material is PC.

Structurally, the Luma40 has a fixed typing angle and dimensions of 240x87x20.8MM. The accompanying switches are factory-lubed Kailh White Rain switches, which provide a muted clacky signature due to the included dampening materials.

The Luma40 keyboard also includes keycaps for the Mac system, and its manufacturing technique for legends is silk-screen printing. The keyboard provides highly customizable functionality alongside a premium build and unique design.
