Alienware AW3926QW: Reviewing the Ultrawide OLED Gaming Monitor

The Alienware AW3926QW is a 39-inch ultrawide OLED monitor featuring 1300 cd/m² HDR and 330 Hz. It offers superior text clarity and robust connectivity, though users face challenges with port access and the unit's substantial size.

The Alienware AW3926QW is a 39-inch ultrawide OLED gaming monitor priced at $1,099.99. The monitor utilizes an RGB Stripe Tandem WOLED panel, delivering several high-end specifications.

Performance metrics include HDR peaks up to 1300 cd/m² and a refresh rate reaching 330 Hz. The display also features perfect OLED contrast and integrated KVM functionality. Its curve is moderate, a design choice meant to appeal to action gamers without excessively interfering with spreadsheet or strategy game usage.

A major selling point is the panel technology. The AW3926QW is an RGB stripe OLED and a tandem OLED, a combination that enables its high brightness levels. Historically, OLEDs have presented issues with text rendering, sometimes showing distracting color fringing in desktop use. The review confirms the AW3926QW eliminates this issue; text clarity rivals that of an LCD screen.

When connected via USB Type-C to a full-featured Thunderbolt or USB4 port, the monitor supports display and audio connectivity, along with USB pass-through for two Type-A ports, one Type-C port, and a headphone jack. Separate USB Type-B plugs are only required when using traditional HDMI or DisplayPort connections.

Connectivity is comprehensive, including a C14 receptacle for the power cable, dual HDMI 2.1 ports, a DisplayPort UHBR20 connection, and the aforementioned USB Type-C port.

The monitor’s physical design includes an Anti-reflective, 2H glass surface. While this surface is noted as glossy, reflections are reported as appearing muted compared to a mirror finish. However, users should expect distracting reflections in environments with bright backlighting or windows.

Under power operation, the unit draws 178W when operating at HDR 1300. Despite the high power draw and active cooling, the monitor remains silent, thanks to a large elliptical cooling vent located on the back chassis.

The build quality is emphasized by its stand and chassis. The stand includes through-designed cable management, which allows for thick DisplayPort, HDMI, and power connectors to pass through easily without undue stretching. The attachment and setup process for the stand are noted as simple.

However, the I/O ports present usability challenges. There are no physical markers or guides to help locate the various connectors. Furthermore, the monitor’s considerable weight of 25 pounds and the limited backward tilt require users to physically lay the monitor over to safely plug in connectors like USB Type-C and the back-side Type-A port, a process described as tedious.

Ergonomically, the unit also has limitations. The review identifies no physical guides for the I/O ports and restricted tilt adjustments. The monitor’s overall thickness is also reported as significant, with the stand section measuring 9.5 inches deeper than the monitor’s main body.

In summary, the AW3926QW offers immaculate OLED image quality and brilliant HDR 1300 highlights, coupled with reliable KVM support and 330Hz dual mode support. Conversely, potential buyers must be aware of the lack of a dedicated blur reduction mode, no MPRT-focused settings, and the considerable bulk of the device.
