Google is introducing a significant privacy enhancement in the Android 16 QPR3 Beta 1, adding a blue notifying dot to indicate when applications are accessing a device’s location. This new visual cue aims to provide users with greater transparency regarding their data privacy by clearly signaling when location services are active. Currently, the feature is live for Google Pixel devices participating in the latest beta program. This development builds upon the privacy framework established with the release of Android 12 in 2021.
During that update, Google introduced a prominent green dot to notify users whenever an app utilized the camera or microphone. Similar to that original feature, the new location indicator will appear near the battery icon at the top of the device’s screen. The blue dot is designed to trigger whenever location services are being used, whether the app is active in the foreground or running in the background. By tapping the dot within the notification shade, users can identify exactly which applications have accessed their location permissions.
This level of detail ensures that users are fully aware of which software is tracking their geographical movements. In instances where multiple permissions are being used simultaneously, the blue dot will combine with the green camera and microphone indicator rather than appearing as a separate icon. To accommodate this expansion, Google has updated the permissions menu title to “Microphone, Camera & Location,” which now displays all three categories. Within this pop-up menu, users maintain the convenient ability to immediately close any app that is accessing these sensitive permissions.
While the feature is currently limited to the Android 16 QPR3 beta, it is expected to see a full public release on Google Pixel devices early next year. It is highly probable that this new location-tracking dot will eventually expand to other Android devices over time.
This expectation is based on the history of the green microphone and camera dot, which has become a standard security feature across all Android devices running Android 12 or newer.
