AMD RX 9070 GRE Review: Examining RDNA 4’s Position in the Mainstream Market

The Sapphire Radeon RX 9070 GRE Pulse utilizes AMD’s RDNA 4 architecture, targeting the mainstream gaming segment. This card is positioned by Sapphire as slotting between the RX 9060 XT and the RX 9070.

The hardware specifications include the Navi 48 XL GPU, which features 3,072 stream processors across 48 RDNA 4 compute units. It pairs with 12 GB of GDDR6 memory on a 192-bit bus, delivering 432 GB/s of bandwidth. The “GRE” suffix stands for “Golden Rabbit Edition,” a naming convention first used with the RX 7900 GRE.

Performance analysis shows that averaged tests at 1440p result in the RX 9070 GRE matching its predecessor, the RX 7900 GRE. When compared to NVIDIA’s strongest alternative, the RTX 5070, the RX 9070 GRE is reported to be approximately 8% slower. However, it performs around 10% faster than both the RTX 3080 and the RX 6900 XT.

The card’s optimal resolution for use is suggested to be 1440p, though it is also noted as a good choice for 1080p aiming for higher refresh rates. For 4K gaming, using upscaling and frame generation technologies may provide an enjoyable experience.

RDNA 4 significantly improves ray tracing performance compared to RDNA 3, largely matching NVIDIA in RT capability. Furthermore, the architecture integrates dedicated AI accelerators into the compute units, which power FSR 4. This upscaling technology uses on-chip machine learning hardware and is designed to improve image quality.

The Sapphire Pulse cooler features a dual-fan design with a compact PCB, utilizing two 8-pin PCIe connectors for power. In testing, it demonstrated quiet operation at just 27.1 dBA under gaming load, while maintaining good thermal performance (58°C GPU and 75°C hotspot).

The RX 9070 GRE’s gaming power consumption is noted as being around 250 W, with an idle draw of only 8 W. The card also supports PCI-Express 5.0 x16 and DisplayPort 2.1a UHBR13.5.

In terms of alternatives, the report highlights that while the RTX 5070 is priced at $630 (Newegg US), the RX 9070 GRE starts at a listed price of $550. Additionally, the RTX 5060 Ti 8 GB is cited as a tempting alternative, costing $380 in the US and being significantly less expensive than the GRE.
