Shokz has updated its clip-on open-ear earbuds with the new OpenDots 2. This version offers enhanced sound quality and a refined, discreet design for safer listening.
The OpenDots 2 follows the launch of the first generation (OpenDots One) in 2025, and it is paired with the less expensive OpenDots Air. While both share a similar clip-on appearance, the OpenDots 2 provides the best form factor Shokz has to offer, including improvements in overall sound quality, two open-ear technologies, and a more durable design.
The OpenDots 2 are positioned as one of Shokz’ most expensive earbuds, carrying a launch price of £179. This is significantly higher than the accompanying OpenDots Air (£129). Compared to other Shokz products, it remains cheaper than the OpenFit Pro (£219), and outside the brand, it costs less than the Bose Ultra Open Earbuds (£250).
The physical design features two main bud parts connected by a flexible stem. Shokz slightly reduced the weight of each bud from 6.5g to 6.4g, contributing to an extremely light feel. The reviewer noted that despite its lightness, the fit remained secure during various activities including working, traveling, and shopping.
The sound profile has received several upgrades. Users can now select from a custom EQ, smart EQ, or various EQ presets via the companion app. Furthermore, the previously included Dolby Audio mode has been upgraded to enhance immersion. The system also utilizes a newer version of Shokz’ Basssphere technology to boost bass punch.
For sound quality, the OpenDots 2 demonstrated an enjoyable level of bass, showcased by tracks like Bob Marley’s ‘Africa Unite.’ When using standard EQ modes on certain music, the reviewer found a warm and pleasant sound profile with grainy trebles, smooth mids, and non-dominating bass.
In terms of functionality, Shokz added a bone conduction microphone alongside the dual air conduction mics to improve call quality. While calls were reported as nice and loud, the clarity was not noted as being the best experienced on Shokz open-ear headphones.
Overall, the OpenDots 2 represent an improvement over the original model, addressing several previous limitations, particularly through its enhanced sound quality. This places it among standout clip-on buds from the brand, offering a step up compared to most competitors in the category.
The reviewer recommends spending more on the OpenDots 2 if the user prioritizes best-sounding clip-on buds and a more rugged design, noting that the cheaper OpenDots Air also sounds good.
