Microsoft and OpenAI Partnership: Mixed Signals Cloud AI Future

Growing speculation has emerged concerning the health of the Microsoft-OpenAI partnership.

Sources reported that Microsoft was reportedly replacing some of OpenAI’s software with its own in-house MAI models. These internal models are increasingly powering apps such as Word and Excel, a development linked to broader cost-cutting initiatives at Microsoft.

This reporting contributed to a wider set of varied signals regarding the relationship between the two companies. While previously described as inseparable, some observers now view the partnership as potentially drifting apart.

In response to this evolving narrative, OpenAI released details about its new GPT 5.6 model family. Alongside this launch, OpenAI announced that GPT 5.6 would become the designated “preferred model” for powering Microsoft’s 365 Copilot.

OpenAI issued a blog post confirming that GPT 5.6 would support Microsoft users across various productivity tools, including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Cowork.

The company also reaffirmed that its partnership with Microsoft aims to extend the benefits of advanced AI to more individuals and organizations.
