LibrePods App Brings Full AirPods Pro Functionality to Android and Linux Devices

Apple’s restrictive ecosystem has historically limited the functionality of its AirPods when paired with non-Apple devices, despite the accessories utilizing the universal Bluetooth standard. This constraint typically results in a severely limited user experience on platforms like Android.

This problem is now being addressed by a new, free application called LibrePods, developed by Kavish Devar. The app elevates the control and features of AirPods on Android devices beyond what older solutions, like OpenPods, could offer.

LibrePods is designed to unlock the complete range of AirPods functionality for Android and Linux users, features that are otherwise exclusive to Apple’s ecosystem (iPhone, iPad, or Mac).

The app’s primary capability is providing full control over Noise Control settings, allowing users to seamlessly switch between Noise Cancellation, Adaptive Noise Cancellation, and Transparency modes directly from their Android device.

Furthermore, LibrePods enables advanced features such as Conversational Awareness, which automatically lowers the audio volume when the user begins speaking, and Ear Detection, which correctly pauses or plays media when the AirPods are inserted or removed from the ears.

Users also gain access to practical utilities like the exact Battery Status percentages for both the charging case and each individual AirPod, a crucial feature typically missing on non-Apple connections. The app also supports Head Gestures for hands-free call pickup and allows for the customization of long-press gestures and the renaming of the AirPods.

To achieve this full feature set, LibrePods utilizes a unique setting where the user must enable the option to “Act as an Apple device,” effectively tricking the AirPods into believing they are connected to an authorized Apple product.

Beyond the immediately available controls, LibrePods also includes a set of hidden, more advanced features. These currently undocumented options include the ability to customize audio transparency, support for pairing with multiple devices simultaneously, and the capability to leverage the AirPods for use as hearing aids.
