Iran War Update: Peace Talks Halted Pending Commitments Amid Global Tensions

Amid ongoing tensions, discussions regarding a potential ceasefire between Iran and the US are currently facing significant hurdles. Tehran has put the scheduled peace talks with the US into doubt, stating that they cannot proceed without specific commitments concerning Lebanon and international sanctions. The US delegation, which is being led by Vice-President JD Vance, has traveled to Islamabad, Pakistan, for the talks. Correspondingly, the Iranian delegation arrived on Friday, led by parliamentary speaker Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf and Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi.

Mr. Qalibaf communicated via X that the precondition for talks was the fulfillment of previously agreed-upon pledges. Specifically, he cited agreements reached with Washington concerning the unblocking of Iranian assets and the establishment of a ceasefire in Lebanon. These talks are complicated by the fact that Israel and the US maintain that the Lebanon campaign is separate from any potential Iran-US ceasefire.

Fighting has been ongoing in Lebanon, where Israeli attacks on Iran-backed Hezbollah militants have resulted in nearly 2,000 deaths since the start of the conflict in March. While the White House has not offered an immediate comment regarding the Iranian demands, US President Donald Trump made strong public remarks on social media. President Trump asserted that Iran was only alive for the purpose of negotiating a deal, warning that Iran possesses “no cards” while also cautioning against any attempts to block the Strait of Hormuz.
