Google Keep Reminders Begin Slow Migration to Tasks, Losing Location Support

The long-anticipated migration of Google Keep reminders to Google Tasks has officially commenced, although the rollout is proceeding slowly and is currently visible on only a limited number of user accounts. This initiative follows the company’s announcement last month, with an expected completion timeline set for the second half of 2025. Users will be notified upon activation with a prompt reading, “Reminders are now Google Tasks.”

Once the migration is active, tapping the reminder bell icon in the top-right corner of a Keep note will result in the reminder being “saved in Google Tasks,” denoted by the service’s signature blue icon. While standard options like setting reminders for “Tomorrow morning” or “Next [week]” remain available, a significant change is the elimination of location-based reminders.

Since Google Tasks does not support reminders based on Home, Work, or specific locations, any existing location data associated with a Keep reminder will be placed directly into the task description instead. This is the most notable functional drawback of the consolidation for users who relied on geographic alerts.

After a reminder is set, it becomes visible in both the Google Tasks application and the Google Calendar grid, marked with a convenient “From Keep” label. Tapping this badge provides quick access by opening the associated Keep note. Notably, Google Keep will retain its “Reminders” page within the navigation drawer for reviewing pending tasks.

A key operational change is that the Google Keep application will no longer be responsible for sending notifications. Alerts for reminders will now be solely handled by the Tasks and Calendar applications, making it essential for users to ensure both apps are installed and have proper notification permissions enabled.

While editing the date and time of these new task reminders can be done from Keep, Tasks, or Calendar, there is a specific nuance regarding titles. The reminder’s title must be edited directly within the Tasks or Calendar application. If a user only changes the title of the associated Keep note, the task reminder’s title will not automatically update.

The migration process is largely seamless, but users should be aware of several technical limits and adjustments. Google Tasks imposes a limit of 100,000 tasks; if a user has more Keep reminders, the oldest ones will not be transferred. Furthermore, long reminder titles will be shortened upon migration.

Finally, tasks are subject to specific date adjustments: tasks with dates beyond the year 3000 will be adjusted to the year 2900, and long-repeating tasks (more than every 1,000 units of time) will have their recurrence schedule capped at once every 1,000 units. Old, non-repeating reminders (older than one year) will be grouped into an “Old Google Keep Reminders” list.
