ASRock SL-1200P: Power-Dense 1200W Platinum Unit for Modern High-End Builds

ASRock has expanded its “Steel Legend” ecosystem into the power supply unit (PSU) market. The company is known for combining rugged aesthetics with high-performance features.

Their latest offering is the Steel Legend SL-1200P, a high-capacity 1200 W unit. This PSU carries an 80 Plus Platinum certification and fully adheres to both the ATX 3.1 and PCIe 5.1 standards. It features the updated 12V-2×6 power connector.

Designed with a fully modular build and a compact 150 mm chassis, the SL-1200P targets users needing significant power for modern GPUs while maintaining case compatibility. The unit is described as notably power-dense.

In terms of electrical performance, the PSU demonstrated excellent ripple suppression across all rails. This control remained within ATX specifications even when tested at 110 % overload. While the 12 V rail exhibited a noted ‘switch’ from 11.91 V to 12.05 V above the 8 A load threshold, this feature ensures peak operation where it is most needed for gaming or workstation setups.

The cooling solution utilizes an iCOOL mode, allowing for completely silent operation up to 50% load. Users should note that the 135 mm fan increases its speed significantly once the load exceeds 1000 W, becoming quite audible under extreme stress.

The projected price range for the SL-1200P is $190–$220. This pricing positions it as a value-conscious alternative to premium 1000 W and higher Platinum units.

When compared to competitors like the Seasonic Prime PX-1200 or the Corsair HX1200i, ASRock offers a package that includes innovative safety features, such as NTC temperature-monitored 12V-2×6 cables designed to prevent connector melting.

Despite some subjective points, such as the embossed cable texture and the 90-degree soldered connector board being a less robust mounting method, the unit maintains peace of mind with its use of high-quality 105 °C Japanese capacitors and a ten-year warranty.

Journalists recommend the SL-1200P for building high-end systems that utilize power-hungry GPUs. It is suggested that the unit is a formidable and well-priced contender for users who seek a modern ATX 3.1 standard PSU that balances advanced safety features with a space-saving design, particularly given the increasing power demands of modern GPUs.
