US Strikes on Kharg Island Risk Major Escalation in the Middle East

Attacks on Iran’s oil facilities located on Kharg Island could ignite a major escalation in the ongoing conflict, according to a senior analyst.

The United States has already conducted bombing operations against military facilities on the crucial Iranian island.

Kharg Island is widely described as the nation’s “crown jewel” due to its critical economic role, handling 90 per cent of Iran’s crude oil exports.

Donald Trump stated that the US military executed what he called “one of the most powerful bombing raids in the History of the Middle East.”

According to Trump, this military action “totally obliterated every MILITARY target” situated on Kharg.

Writing on the platform Truth Social, he added, “For reasons of decency, I have chosen NOT to wipe out the Oil infrastructure on the island.”

Despite this, the threat to the oil infrastructure remains a critical point of tension. Sina Toossi, a senior fellow at the Centre for International Policy, spoke to Al Jazeera on Sunday regarding the potential consequences of such an event.

Toossi warned that any direct attack on Kharg Island’s oil facilities would serve as a game-changer in the war.

Outlining the region’s dynamics, Toossi explained Iran’s tactical approach to the conflict in the Persian Gulf.

“Iran’s strategy has been to go steadily up the escalation ladder and threaten that if its critical oil infrastructure came under attack, it would widen its attacks on critical oil infrastructure in the Persian Gulf,” Toossi stated.

US President Trump has issued further warnings regarding the potential targeting of these vital oil facilities.

He stated that Iran’s oil infrastructure could still be targeted if the nation continues to block passage through the Strait of Hormuz.

The Strait of Hormuz remains a key global oil trade route, making its unobstructed passage a significant international priority.
