The MSI MAG Z890 TomaHawk WiFi II: A Value-Oriented Contender in the Entry-Level Market

The current market environment suggests that consumers often have to pay increasing prices for diminishing returns. However, some exceptions exist, particularly in the entry-level or ‘value-oriented’ segment. MSI addressed this market need nearly a decade ago, aiming to create an entry-level model that covered the needs and wants of the budget sector while costing less than comparable options from other manufacturers.

Today’s focus is on the MSI MAG Z890 TomaHawk WiFi II, a mainstream and advanced offering priced at approximately $349 CAD. On paper, the motherboard presents several advanced features for its price point. These include a 5GbE NIC for the Ethernet port and support for WiFi 7, along with Bluetooth 5.4, a combination rarely found in the sub-$350 CAD price range.

For connectivity, the board features three usable PCIe slots: a PCIe 5.0 x16 slot and a pair of PCIe 4.0 x4 slots, all utilizing the x16 form factor for wider compatibility. The dedicated video card slot is equipped with Steel Armor treatment and EZ PCIe Release. Additionally, the board supports a high DDR5 overclocking capability of 9200+ MT/s, a feature noted as highly advanced for a sub-$350 motherboard.

Regarding its internal systems, the TomaHawk includes a 20-way (16+1+1+1) VRM utilizing 90A power stages. While the power delivery subsystem may not match the robustness of premium models, this specification was previously considered exceptionally advanced for entry-level systems, supporting practical CPUs like Core Ultra 5 or Core Ultra 3.

Connectivity options include four M.2 ports, with one being PCIe 5.0 x4 and directly connected to the CPU. The three chipset-connected ports support various sizes of M.2 drives, from M.2 22110 down to M.2 2230 PCIe 4.0 x4-sized drives. The design minimizes complexities concerning the bifurcation of slots between USB, M.2, and PCIe.

For audio, the motherboard features the Realtek ALC1220P, described as a reliable solution that was previously reserved for upper-mainstream boards.

Competitively, the TomaHawk faces competition from other brands, including ASUS, which offers six options such as the ROG STRIX Z890-F GAMING WIFI ($450) and the TUF GAMING Z890-PRO WIFI ($350). These models are used as points of reference for the TomaHawk’s position in the market.
