President Trump Evacuated from White House Dinner After Shooter Apprehended

President Donald Trump was forced to evacuate from the White House correspondents’ dinner after a security incident involving a suspected shooter. The suspect was taken into custody at the Washington Hotel where the event was being held.

Mr. Trump stated that a man armed with multiple weapons charged at a security checkpoint. This incident required the presidential evacuation from the dinner. According to Mr. Trump, the suspect fired at a Secret Service agent from very close distance, but the agent was saved by his bulletproof vest. The chief of police at the Metropolitan Police Department, Jeff Carroll, confirmed the suspect was taken to hospital for evaluation, though he stated the agent had not been struck by gunfire.

Following the incident, an FBI investigation was launched, with the FBI counter-terrorism unit leading the inquiry. While the incident appeared to be isolated, police noted they could not yet determine the suspect’s motivation or target. Preliminary information suggested the suspect was a guest at the Washington Hotel and acted alone. During a press conference, President Trump maintained this impression, referring to the suspect as a “lone wolf, a whack job.”

Both the President and Vice-President JD Vance were reported as unharmed. The evening was disrupted when, initially, guests were seated for only a short time before Secret Service flooded the room and instructed attendees to “get down.” The correspondents’ dinner was subsequently scrapped for the night and was scheduled for rescheduling within 30 days.

Law enforcement officials charged the apprehended suspect with using a firearm during a crime of violence and assault on a federal officer using a dangerous weapon. He is scheduled to appear before a US district judge on Monday. The incident highlighted security concerns at the Washington Hilton, where, although the hotel generally remains open, security focus is typically limited to the ballroom area, leaving potential openings in public spaces.
