Nintendo Confirms Major Shift in Focus to Switch 2 Development

Nintendo has officially signaled a pivotal moment in its product strategy, revealing in its latest financial results that the company is now fully shifting its development focus from the original Switch console to the new Switch 2. This move marks the formal transition of resources as the company commits to its next-generation hardware.

The success of the Switch 2 has clearly validated this direction. Nintendo shared impressive sales data, confirming that the new console has already sold over 10 million units. Crucially, a dominant 84% of those customers upgraded from the original Switch system, indicating a clear readiness among the existing player base for the new hardware.

This strong uptake has given Nintendo the confidence to leave the original Switch’s core development in the past and dedicate its efforts to expanding the Switch 2 ecosystem.

Despite this strategic pivot, Nintendo has assured consumers that the original Switch console will not immediately vanish from store shelves. The company stated it will continue to manufacture and produce the original Switch model for as long as consumer demand persists, suggesting a sustained, if diminished, presence in the retail market for the foreseeable future.

In terms of services, Nintendo also provided a health check on its online subscription base. The company announced that there are currently 34 million Nintendo Switch Online subscribers. While this is a substantial figure, it represents just over a quarter of the total player base, leaving significant room for growth in the subscription sector.

Finally, the financial presentation contained a stealthy, yet exciting, hint for fans of Nintendo’s intellectual property. The company made a subtle mention that it plans to pursue more movies based on Nintendo IPs following the release of the highly anticipated Zelda movie in 2027, confirming the company’s commitment to expanding its cinematic universe.
