MSI Claw 8 EX Brings Performance Leap to PC Handhelds

The MSI Claw 8 EX features an Intel G3 Extreme processor, a handheld-focused Panther Lake SoC. This chip incorporates a CPU with two Cougar Cove P-cores and four Darkmont LP E-cores, alongside eight Darkmont E-cores. Graphics processing is handled by the Arc B390 GPU, which features 12 Xe cores built on the Xe3 architecture. The device is also technically a Copilot+ PC due to the inclusion of an NPU, making it compatible with Microsoft’s Auto SR upscaler.

The Claw 8 EX supports substantial memory and storage specifications, including 32 GB of LPDDR5X-8533 memory and a 1 TB PCIe 4.0 SSD. Hardware features include an 8-inch 120 Hz display with VRR support, an 80 Wh battery, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and two speakers supporting Dolby Atmos. Connectivity options are extensive, including Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The design also incorporates Hall effect thumbsticks and triggers, improved rumble motors, a 2280 M.2 SSD slot for upgrades, and a microSD Express card slot.

The G3 Extreme powering the Claw 8 EX is noted for its performance; it is described as being approximately 45% faster than the Z2 Extreme and Core Ultra 7 258V at 35 W. Furthermore, the unit maintains a performance edge across various power levels, allowing users to enjoy similar gaming performance at lower power outputs compared to higher settings.

Performance capability extends to playing latest AAA games at up to 1200p with medium settings and XeSS upscaling on the device’s 8-inch screen. The hardware is also praised for its improved ergonomics, allowing for extended periods of comfortable use while gaming.

In terms of software, Xbox Mode has received multiple updates, functioning as a capable controller-first Windows interface specifically designed for gaming, removing the need to switch to the regular Windows desktop during play. While MSI Center M and Quick Settings are considered serviceable, they are noted to lag behind competitors in feature updates and responsiveness.

Intel is highlighted for designing the G3 Extreme as a proper PC handheld chip, distinct from lightly customized laptop SKUs such as those used by AMD. The G3 Extreme offers enhancements including improved efficiency via Intelligent Bias Control, limiting the P-cores to 14 W or below while providing more power to the GPU. Additionally, Intel is responsible for delivering new GPU drivers, leading to more frequent driver updates compared to devices utilizing AMD hardware.

The device includes ML-based XeSS upscaling and frame generation, which are reported to look superior to FSR 3.1. The Claw 8 EX’s physical design was praised for its ultra-comfortable feel and improved ergonomics, suggesting a positive generational upgrade to the PC handheld market.

However, the initial pricing presents a significant consideration, with the MSI Claw 8 EX selling for $1,799 in the US. Competitors are also mentioned: the ONEXPLAYER 3 (which utilizes the G3 Extreme) is available at an equivalent price point when configured with 32 GB RAM and 1 TB storage. Both units offer robust performance, though the Claw 8 EX’s OLED screen was noted as a feature lacking in other options.

Despite its high cost, the Claw 8 EX offers strong overall features including excellent battery life, capable cooling, two Thunderbolt 4 ports, and highly comfortable ergonomics. The comprehensive hardware package suggests it is considered one of the best PC handhelds currently available.
