Microsoft has committed to addressing several major issues within the Windows 11 operating system. The changes aim to resolve recent complaints from users regarding the direction of the desktop software.
Pavan Davuluri, the President of Windows & Devices at Microsoft, detailed these upcoming adjustments in a lengthy blog post. The message was also distributed via email to users participating in the Windows Insider program.
According to Davuluri, Microsoft plans to implement a series of “initial changes” to the operating system. These modifications are scheduled to arrive in preview versions of Windows over the next couple of months.
A significant portion of the planned adjustments involves reducing artificial intelligence integrations. Microsoft intends to decrease what the blog post described as “unnecessary Copilot entry points” throughout the system.
This reduction in artificial intelligence will also extend to specific default applications. Users can expect fewer AI features pushed into programs such as Photos and Notepad.
Beyond artificial intelligence, Microsoft is altering the behavior of desktop widgets. The company plans to make these widgets “quieter” and generally less distracting for users.
Alongside the noise reduction for widgets, Microsoft is introducing improved personalization controls. This will allow users to better manage how widgets appear and function on their desktop.
Another primary focus of the upcoming changes is Windows Updates. Davuluri stated that the update process will become less disruptive to users going forward.
Microsoft is giving users more direct control over when and how updates occur. Individuals will have more choices when it comes to skipping updates entirely.
These new choices for skipping updates will be available during key system moments. For example, users will see these options when setting up the operating system or when restarting their computer.
Finally, the changes will address the duration for which updates can be delayed. Microsoft will allow users to pause Windows Updates for longer periods of time than previously permitted.
