Hong Kong’s leadership has overseen a solemn ceremony to mourn the victims of the devastating high-rise apartment complex fire at Wang Fuk Court. The official death toll has tragically risen to at least 128 people, with authorities warning that the figure is likely to climb higher as 200 others remain unaccounted for days after the tragedy began.
The massive fire, which started on Wednesday afternoon, rapidly spread across seven of the eight 32-storey blocks in the Tai Po district, near the border with mainland China. The complex was undergoing major renovations, and the buildings were enveloped in bamboo scaffolding, green mesh, and layered foam insulation, materials authorities believe allowed the blaze to escalate and spread with unprecedented speed.
This incident is now recognized as Hong Kong’s worst fire in nearly 80 years, prompting an immediate and extensive investigation into the cause and scale of the disaster. Authorities have arrested 11 people in connection with the blaze.
The arrests are related to possible corruption and the alleged use of unsafe and highly flammable materials during the renovation process, directly contributing to the fire’s severity. Furthermore, officials have confirmed that the fire alarm systems at the massive estate, which is home to more than 4,600 people, were reportedly not functioning correctly when the disaster struck.
While rescue operations at the site formally concluded on Friday, police have stated that they will continue to search the burnt-out buildings as part of the ongoing criminal investigation. During this meticulous search of the wreckage, police anticipate they may still discover more bodies, confirming the fear that the final death toll has not yet been reached.
The entire city is now grappling with the aftermath of the catastrophe, focusing on supporting the families of the victims and demanding accountability for the failures that led to such an immense loss of life in the public housing complex.
