Apple Inc. is reportedly undergoing a rare round of job cuts within its sales division, affecting several dozen workers. This internal workforce reduction is notable as the iPhone maker has largely avoided the large-scale layoffs that have become common across the wider tech sector.
The affected positions are concentrated within teams responsible for selling to institutional clients, including the enterprise, government, and academic sectors. This specific targeting suggests Apple is planning a strategic shift in how it approaches these large-scale accounts, potentially favoring a streamlined approach or increased reliance on channel partners.
In a statement provided to Bloomberg, Apple officially confirmed the restructuring. The company stated that in an effort “to connect with even more customers, we are making some changes in our sales team that affect a small number of roles.” The affected employees, including account managers and staff operating the company’s briefing centers for major customers, have until early next year to secure a new internal role or accept a severance package.
Sources familiar with the matter indicated that one of the hardest-hit groups was the government sales team, which works with agencies such as the U.S. Defense Department and Justice Department. This team had already been dealing with tough conditions following the recent U.S. government shutdown and broader government spending reductions.
Internally, Apple is positioning the layoffs as an effort to streamline operations and eliminate overlapping responsibilities. However, some affected workers believe the actual motive is a strategic pivot toward third-party resellers (known as ‘the channel’), a move that helps the company lower its internal salary and operational costs.
The decision to cut jobs comes despite Apple’s strong financial footing, which recently recorded approximately 166,000 full-time employees and projects record-breaking revenue for the December quarter. This is in contrast to mass layoffs recently announced by competitors like Amazon, which plans to cut 14,000 jobs, and Verizon, which eliminated over 13,000 roles, though Apple’s move is significantly smaller in scale.
For a company whose CEO, Tim Cook, has historically described layoffs as a “last resort,” this move signals a decisive effort to adjust its institutional sales strategy and achieve greater efficiency in specific parts of its business model.
