According to an industry survey conducted by analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, Apple’s debut foldable smartphone is anticipated to face significant initial supply constraints. While demand for the device is expected to be high, Kuo estimates that shortly after its launch late in Q3 2026, Apple will initially produce between 500,000 and one million units.
Following this preliminary phase, the company is expected to increase production significantly. By the end of 2026, reports suggest Apple will ramp up shipping to approximately seven to eight million units.
Kuo attributes this slow initial manufacturing pace to the inherent technical challenges presented by the iPhone Ultra’s innovative folding design during the initial stages of production. He drew a parallel to previous technology launches, such as the iPhone X, which also experienced a slower initial rollout due to novel innovations like OLED all-screen designs, notches, and TrueDepth FaceID cameras.
Despite the expected high retail price, potentially up to $2,500, Kuo predicts strong consumer interest throughout 2026. He expects the foldable iPhone to sell out immediately once pre-orders open, with lead times potentially extending up to six weeks or longer through December.
Furthermore, the combination of scarce initial supply, a distinct design, and an innovative user experience is suggested by Kuo as factors that could support a short-term resale premium for the device.
The rumored specifications describe the unannounced foldable phone, tentatively named “iPhone Ultra” or “iPhone Fold.” It is expected to feature a 5.5-inch exterior display and a 7.8-inch interior display. The internal screen size is noted as being slightly smaller than the 8.3-inch iPad mini, and the device should appear squarer than Samsung’s Galaxy Z Fold 7 when folded. Upon unfolding, it is expected to be considerably wider.
The phone is rumored to utilize a flexible OLED screen coupled with a laser-drilled metal support plate designed to disperse stress, aiming for a nearly invisible crease.
It should be noted that the information originates from Kuo’s report and carries a caveat. While Apple has not confirmed the existence of this highly anticipated foldable smartphone, the source notes that recent technical indicators, such as terms like “foldState” and “angleDegrees” within the iOS 27 beta, add credence to the notion that such a device is imminent.
